Data Management Admin Tool
Use the data management tool to pair a newsletter with its corresponding filter by category.
Access to the Flying Cork x UPMC back end data management tool is currently granted via email.
Manage Newsletter/(Filter By) Category Pairs
Visit the data management tool (via the access URL provided in an email) and navigate to Manage Newsletters and Categories > Category/Newsletter Pairs.
The file below creates the functionality to add, edit, delete, and display all newsletter/category pairs within the back end data management tool. Data manually populated into the back end then gets pulled into the front end of the UPMC Dynamic Preference Center. This data decides which newsletters populate the “Available Subscriptions” section when a category is chosen from filter by drop down menu.
- File path: My Landing Pages > Profile Center > Dynamic Preference center > Back End > AJAX Manage Preference Cats and Subs - Edit Landing Page
The data from this section gets recorded in a data extension called Subscription_and_Category, located here:
Add Newsletter/Category Pair
Click “Pair Newsletter to Category” to add a new newsletter/category pair. These additions will immediately be reflected in the preference center.
- Select a Category: Choose a category from the pre-populated drop down menu.
- Select a Newsletter: Choose a newsletter from the pre-populated drop down menu to pair with the chosen category. The data extension name associated with this newsletter is what shows in the data table.

Edit/Delete Newsletter/Category Pair
Click the “Edit” button to the right of the newsletter/category pair to make changes to that particular pair.
When newsletter/category pair data is edited using the data management tool, the record in the Subscription_and_Category data extension will also be updated, and changes are immediately reflected in the preference center.
Click the “Delete” button to the right of the newsletter/category pair to delete it.
When newsletter/category pair data is deleted using the data management tool, the record in the Subscription_and_Category data extension will also be deleted, and the newsletter will no longer be visible in its corresponding filter by category group in the preference center.

Manage Categories
Categories added to the data management tool populate the “Select a Category” drop down menu on this page. If the category you are looking for is not in the drop down menu, it may still need to be added to the data management tool. Click here for information on managing categories.
Preference Center Interface
On Page Load
When the page loads, we pull records from the Subscription_and_Category Data Extension. Then we start to loop through the different newsletters, we reference this DE to see if the newsletter DE that we are currently adding has any categories tied to it.
If we do find a matching DE that has a category, we then set that category in the PreferenceCenterData.DataExtensions Object. If not match is found, we move to the next record.
DOM Object Creation and Category Filter
When we start to create the DOM objects for each newsletter, we pull from PreferenceCenterData.DataExtensions.category to create a class with the name of the category and apply it to the container of the new DOM object. We use this class to filter off of.
We run the filterNewsletters() function onChange, which will:
- Create a new array, called divsToHide, containing all of the newsletter DOM objects
- Grab the value (which would be the category) from the dropdown
- Set all newsletters to display none, then loop back through the divsToHide array and set any newsletters matching the category pulled from the dropdown to display inline block.
